Pumping Iron

Movie Review

The title very well gives away what this movie is about. Featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger as himself, is a true classic documentary on bodybuilding and has achieved the reputation of humanising the sport ever since the films release.

Arnold very much likes this movies, like stated before it stars himself and shows his true side. Not to mention the other great bodybuilders also featured with the documentary. Some of times greats like Lou Ferrigno (The Increadible Hulk), Franco Columbu, Ken Waller & Mike Katz. The documentary revolves around the lives of the bodybuilders and how they are preparing as they train for the 1975 Mr. Olympia contest held in South Africa. Each main bodybuilder is interviewed and asked questions on different topics. Arnold Schwarzenegger: "I want to be remembered for thousands of years like Jesus." Then we have Lou Ferringo training extremely hard before the competition screaming on each rep "Arnold, Arnold, Arnold!"

Despite the tension during competition all the bodybuilders are friendly towards each other yet they have excellent mental preparation also, especially in Arnold's case you can see how Arnold has it all sorted out and shows one hundred percent confidence in any case. This film came in the right time during Arnold's career it showed that he had great potential for future acting and would be able to lead a career in movies. Arnold in 'Pumping Iron' won Golden Globe for Best Newcomer of the Year.

This film is seen as one of the ultimate bodybuilding movies ever. Since its release people who witnessed it soon were obsessed and admired it. Producers George Butler and Charles Gaines did a great job and the success of the flick is easily noticed. For serious lifting and muscles don't miss this one, it's also a historical recording of Arnold as this was his retirement from the sport even though he came back in 1980 for a comeback. Check your video store or friends movie collection cos this flick is no longer in production. Arnold has mentioned a new DVD release may be coming soon with extra footage so keep an eye out for that one! in the meantime borrow a copy.
